Eliminating Panic from the Economic Environment
It has been reported that the UK economy grew by 0.8% between July and September which for many was quite a surprise. It feels as though there is a never ending stream of negative news concerning both the UK and global economy, all of which has done little or nothing to extinguish fear amongst businesses and consumers.
Business and emotions such as fear do not always go hand in hand. The capacity to restrain emotion in business is a vital skill and one which is frequently ignored. Placing emotions to one side completely when carrying out business can however be somewhat dangerous because business is not necessarily black and white, there can be a lot of grey.
If as a business owner you are full of fear it may well prevent you from taking the important steps to accomplish what you need. For example, fear of the economic forecast could stop you from hiring new staff or buying new machinery. There are hazards with everything in business and to stop taking risks, be it little or large will stutter or stop the business from growing.
Growth is vital for all businesses. However it is just as important that growth is managed to be sustainable. Darwin observed that nature might be full of wonder and beauty but the reality of it is that all that beauty we see is actually a fierce battle for survival. Many would argue that the business world has wholeheartedly approved and adopted Darwinian thinking.
In business you have competitors which drive a business to continuously improve. By growing a business faster and more successfully than your rivals you will guarantee the business continues to exist and hopefully expand.
At the same time it is down to the government to try and encourage business and offer the right kind of incentives which will encourage confidence and growth. The more the government can assure and ease people's worries the greater the conditions are for business to take place. After two years of economic difficulty it is tough to suddenly think positively about the economy but it crucial to believe in what you are doing and where you are heading.
The UK’s public sector is facing a big squeeze on spending and regrettably many civil servants will lose their jobs. Ultimately it is the private sector which is going to have to grow and take on as many of these people as possible.
If your business is enjoying success then fear shouldn't stop you from buying those
executive desks,
glass desks or any other
executive office furniture you like. Investing in your business is vital, both in terms of manpower and equipment.
The future is always clouded but the present is clear and it is essential that fear doesn't drag businesses, the economy and people down a slippery slope. A famous United States general, George S Patton once said "There is a time to take counsel of your fears, and there is a time to never listen to any fear".
